The RCL System
The RCL-system minimizes time spent in the harbour which in turn minimizes the emissions of stationary ships. By shortening the time in port turn around, there is also a possibility to reduce the speed at sea and still arrive on time at the next port of call which can enable huge savings in emissions and fuel consumption.
DIGITALIZATION & EFFICIENCY
The RCL system uses advances wireless communication technology, allowing communication between each individual lock, ship, and terminal. The RCL system stores data related to the specific lock.
Data collected by the lock can be used to improve performance, plan maintenance, track movements and usage of the locks. This potentially enables new working procedures for container locking devices as the technology is implemented widely.
Remote operation of container locking devices is an important step towards fully automated container handling services. Adopting the system allows significant further streamlining of the lashing, loading and unloading process, changing the working process for personnel and the risk of human error. It increases the efficiency of the container handling process, making it faster, cheaper and safer. Allowing increased efficiency and speed of loading operations.

Ship To Shore (STS) loading and unloading containers are quicker using the RCL system. This allows the vessels to spend less time in port, reducing port fees, and thus transport more containers, increasing revenue. The RCL system reduces or eliminates the need for stevedores, resulting in cost savings from reduced personnel, as well as reduced losses from human errors while loading.
By allowing digital tracking and monitoring of the twistlocks, over time the RCL system will allow the owner to manage their stock of twistlocks, applying lifecycle management and pre-emptive maintenance to minimise the total cost of ownership.
For the Terminal Operator, the increased speed improves the overall efficiency of the cranes, allowing a terminal to manage more containers with the same basic equipment. The RCL system also allows efficient use of vertical tandem lift (VTL), to further improve efficiency. The RCL system can easily be retrofitted on existing STS cranes and does not require significant investment.

The RCL system improves the safety of the container handling process. During STS and container handling maneuvers the remotely operated lock reduces or eliminates the need for stevedore interaction on deck, and up among the container stacks, reducing the occasion for accidents.
The RCL system has an extremely robust construction and durable mechanism, to prevent failure when under load at sea. The locks can easily be checked, by computer and/or by a controller, to ensure that all vessel locks are locked before setting to sea, as well as checked for details of the latest service. The locks are fitted with emergency manual release, similar to existing twistlocks.
